The global illegal wildlife trade is considered a major threat to wildlife and biodiversity conservation worldwide. It involves multiple sources, transit stops, and consuming countries along the supply chain and China is amongst the key countries in the illegal global wildlife trade chain. On the one hand, loopholes in China’s domestic policies regarding wildlife conservation and use, such as those on the wildlife use in medicines, are creating barriers to effective management against illegal wildlife trade. On the other hand, a lack of coordination and cooperation with other supply chain countries in policy and enforcement is also standing in the way of greater progress toward tackling cross-border illegal wildlife trade.
As a Chinese NGO with proven success in informing conservation and trade-related policies, GEI intends to take this opportunity to join with international NGOs to tackling illegal wildlife trade issues both in China and along the supply chain.
GEI works with policymakers, enforcement agencies, academics, local communities, and other NGOs on :
1. Improving domestic policies and supporting the effective implementation of these policies
2. Supporting dialogues and cooperation between China and other countries along the international wildlife trafficking supply chain
1. Policy Analysis and Advocacy: we facilitate studies and discussions to bring about improvement recommendations to national and international laws and policies for more effective management and control against IWT.
2. Bilateral and Multilateral Dialogues and Cooperation: we inform and engage with key government agencies of China to establish effective cooperation with counterparts in other countries so as to better coordinate actions against IWT.
3. Enforcement Capacity Building: we coordinate training and exchanges to wildlife enforcement officers in China and other countries to bridge enforcement capacity gaps and spark innovative collaboration mechanisms.
4. Community Participation and Engagement: we empower local communities to steward wildlife resources while realizing sustainable livelihoods with consideration of their region’s specific needs and challenges.
