Due to the lack of recognition of the ecological importance of mountain forests and the tension between local economic development and conservation, developing areas still rely too much on deforestation. From 2006 onwards, GEI worked to protect forest resources and alleviate conflicts. In 2016, this work expanded to “The Belt and Road” countries.
The Fengtongzhai National Nature Reserve, home to the giant panda, is located in northeast Sichuan province. Since its establishment in 1975, the reserve has struggled to solve the contradiction between supporting the local communities’ livelihood, which includes collecting firewood, and maintaining the reserve as a protective zone. GEI addresses both of these issues with market-based community solutions.
Needs:
Determine which mechanism of protection is most successful and apply around the world.
Approach:
The CCCA helps governments and local communities reach an agreement. Provide guidance and support to NDRC on how to use compensation funds to provide ecological compensation. Establish protection and development fund.
Apply protocol protection mechanisms throughout the country. Promote community economic development and improve the standard of living for local residents. To provide the NDRC Ecological Compensation Ordinance working group ecological compensation case studies.
Helped Baoxing County establish more than 7000 hectares of land protection
Set up and facilitated training for more than 1000 biogas digesters
Built a methane tank maintenance team
helped local herdsmen develop and scale beekeeping and rabbit breeding industries
registered the “Tuyuan farmer cooperative”
established a 1000 yuan protection and development fund using local government subsidies.
Cooperated with the Institute of Science and Technology Information of the National Forestry Research Institute to prepare a third party policy evaluation of natural forest protection project
awarded the World Bank’s “Lenovo Innovation Award” and Ford’s “Ford automotive environmental award”, as well as two awards of 160 thousand yuan and 10 thousand yuan bonus.
Developed “eco patrol monitoring software” based on mobile Android system and “ecological protection intelligent information system software””.
Additionally, the State Forestry Administration (SFA), in cooperation with GEI, published two official documents: the Forest Management and Protection Responsibility Agreement Template and the Forest Management and Protection Practices for the Natural Forest Protection Program.
